Catholic Priest and broadcaster Father Joseph Kimu has asked
Malawians to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday in a very
special way.
Fr Kimu, speaking on the Roman Catholic Church’s Radio Maria
at the start of his Easter Sunday mass urged Malawians to thank God for giving
them a new leader, Her Excellency Joyce Hilda Banda.
“We, Malawians, have more than a million reasons to celebrate
Easter. I liked the maiden speech by the new President, Mrs Banda, no room for
revenge. Let us not give Satan chance. Let God be in control. Malawi is poor
but we are rich in dignity and love. We have taught the world that we can
effect transition peacefully. Let other countries come and learn from us,” said
Fr Kimu.
The priest, who is also director of Radio Maria Malawi, said
God has proven that Malawi can even be led by a female president.
Her Excellency Joyce Banda was sworn in as Malawi’s fourth
president on Saturday at a colourful event that took place at the Parliament
Building in Lilongwe replacing the 78-year-old dictator who died at Kamuzu
Central Hospital in Lilongwe on Thursday, April 5th after suffering
a cardiac arrest.
She becomes the first female president in Southern Africa
and the second in Africa after Liberia’s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
“We, at Radio Maria, are happy that we have a female
president because our saint is also a woman, Mary. You, women support your
fellow woman. Leave the pull her down syndrome,” Father Kimu said in his
sermon.
Last year, a senior official of the former ruling Democratic
Progressive Party (South) Noel Masangwi said at a public rally Malawians were not
ready to be ruled by a female president.
And Malawians are now anxiously waiting to see what Masangwi
will do that he is being ruled by a woman he rebuked.
